Singapore Polytechnic : Redesigning

Singapore Polytechnic
Redesigning the Existing Website
Preface :
This was supposedly a school project. This website redesign is an experimental case study for educational purposes, and in no way it is connected with Singapore Polytechnic.

Role :
Wearing multiple caps!

Project Goals :
To provide information, updates and and resources to current stakeholders of the school (i.e. Current students, Parents, Alumni and Staff)
To attract more and more prospective students to apply for courses
Discovering the Problem :
At the discovery phase of our project, we conducted interviews with 12 participants, who were the users consisting of  prospective students/current students/alumni/and or parents of prospective students.

User Interviews :
The interviews were rather insightful,
- Website content is too informative which is overwhelming to the users
- Navigation through the website isn't an easy journey
- First timers found it challenging to learn how the website works. Navigation titles are not clear. Users    had to      dig through the titles/content to find their desired goal
- Difficult for current users to find information, they found it prospective students' centric
Personas and User journey mapping(As Is) :
Information Architecture :
From our User interviews, we had gotten to know the website is crowded with data. Thus, we cut down on the number of titles and subtitles within the global and local navigation systems and retained the only essential ones, which were intuitive in nature.
Brand Identity :
The first thing that comes to mind when we look at the Singapore Polytechnic website is their colour scheme. We chose not to meddle with the brand identity so as to,
- Have a sense of familiarity for users
- Effectively delivers the energy and passion of the institution

In our team, was a graphic designer who came up with new icons which we used to replace the old crowded and messy page. This gave us have a clean and clear layout.
High- Fidelity Prototype :
Mobile Prototype
Desktop Version
Usability Testing :
About time to put our prototypes into action. This would enable us with the fact whether the proposed design met with the user needs and how more could we improve to make it worthwhile.

Usability tests were conducted remotely. Thanks to zoom and Google meet!
Participants were a mix of current and prospective students of SP. Each participant was required to complete two different tasks on both the mobile and desktop prototypes, to evaluate the results fairly.

Result :
User felt at ease navigating through the website to get the information that they needed. The layout seemed clean and neat.

We used the System Usability Scale (SUS) to measure the usability of both prototypes. the desktop version was ranked good with an average score of 80, while the mobile version was ranked excellent with an average score of 89.5. Users found the mobile design more simplistic making it more intuitive.
Recommendations :
What Next?
Reflection :
This project was completed virtually collaborating with the team. Initially there were some hiccups. Such as; difficulty trying to coordinate and collaborate and the online conversation seemed tougher than ever imagined. Incorporating the changes was a big deal too.
The experience during this project made me realise that brainstorming ideas as a team is as important as communicating with the team. We ought to be clear and to the point when giving an opinion so that there is no miscommunication. Ask questions when you need a clarification, do not assume!

But, as they say, all is well that ends well.
